Prevention Tips
Fire proofing standards
-
All complexes have to be maintained within a “fuel modification zone”. In other words the complex should be separated from the fire prone environment by removing flash and ladder fuels, thinning out dense thickets and ;
-
Construction of an “asset protection zone” of at about 10 metres, should be maintained around each structure. This, depending on the circumstances, should be comprised of non flammable vegetation as far as possible. It could include mown lawn, or hoed and slashed land;
-
Remove alien invasive trees where practical and replant with indigenous, more fire-resistant species;
-
Remove all tree branches that overhang building roofs;
-
Ensure that there no “ladder fuels” leading up to the structure from the veld;
-
Ensure that wooden frames, verandahs and decks are treated with fire-retardant;
-
Ensure all roofing material is sealed and anchored. Corrugated iron sheets should not have gaps or openings, tiles have to be completed and all joints sealed;
-
All eaves should be boxed in. No roof structures should be exposed;
-
Ventilating bricks or opening should be clear of dry material, and should be covered with sieve material to prevent the sparks and embers from entering structures;
-
Thatch roofs should have external sprinklers that are tested each year for efficiency;
-
Grass and vegetation grass under wooden structures such as sundecks;
-
LP gas cylinders should be correctly positioned away from doors, drains, windows or any area where gas can accumulate;
-
Keep firewood piles and compost heaps away from building walls or vegetation;
-
Remove electrical wiring from trees and bushes where possible. Alternatively, cut back the branches;
-
Clear all access routes to and around your house. Keep them clear;
-
Do not burn refuse or garden waste at all unless authorised to do so;
-
Develop a mutual action plan with your neighbours for a fire emergency.
